What is a Bone Densitometer used for?

The bone density scan machine, also known as Bone D, dual-energy absorptiometry, DEXA or DXA X-rays, is used to perform low-dose X-ray tests that measure the amount of calcium and other minerals in the patient’s body. This type of test helps doctors with determining the strength and thickness of bones – i.e. the bone density.

Because the bone density scan machine is effective in this area, it is commonly used to diagnose Osteopenia and Osteoporosis, or to predict the patient’s risk of future fractures and to see if treatment for Osteoporosis is effective.

Because it is fairly common that bones become less dense with age (Osteopenia), it puts elderly people at higher risk for Osteoporosis. Thus, Osteoporosis is considered a progressive disease and it is important to test for it. Therefore, the bone density test machine is an important piece of equipment for radiologists in connection with testing for and treatment of Osteopenia or Osteoporosis.

A DXA bone density test takes about 10-30 minutes depending on the bone density measurement machine and what part of the body you need to examine.

Central Device or Peripheral Device?

There are two types of DEXA scanners: The central device and the peripheral device.

Depending on what kind of scan you need to perform you can choose between a central or peripheral DXA machine.

The central device (DXA) is the device mostly used by doctors and radiologists in hospitals or clinics. These devices are used for hip and spinal scans, whereas the peripheral devices (pDXA) are used for scans of the extremities such as wrists, fingers, feet or forearms. The Peripheral DXA is smaller than the Central DXA and is portable, making it easy to maneuver around your clinic for easy scans.
